Writing in Two Worlds: How I Balance Personal Stories and Expert Advice
No Roadmap To Follow, Exploring Two Different Ways Of Writing
I have found this journey and love for writing rewarding in so many ways. First, I never thought of myself as a ‘writer,’ mainly because of my fear that I couldn’t spell or navigate grammar successfully. However, due to consistent encouragement and some help from my sister-in-law and others, I feel I can more authentically share my stories, thoughts, and feelings through the written word.
Telling stories brings me joy, and through the encouragement of a friend, he suggested that I submit some essays for consideration to write for Forbes. They liked my take, and now I write for Forbes as a contributor. (Talk about never having that on my radar screen.) It’s a different type of writing, one where my voice is more of an ‘expert’ in an area, unlike my Substack writings. It’s been a challenge, but one I have enjoyed exploring.
I wanted to share my recent Forbes stories with you in case you haven’t had a chance to read them. If you're a reader of my Substack, you’ll notice a few of the themes, but now with a different twist for a new audience. It’s pushed me to look beyond some of my standard axioms and has opened up new vectors for me to explore on my Substack.
My most recent one is a topical take on Change Management, using a very recent statement by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as a critical way to navigate those waters. I also offer a few thoughts, having been at the point a few times with culture changes.

My Substack post on Focus and Preparation is one of my favorites, but this spin for Forbes is a new approach. One that is a bit more accessible to more readers if you aren’t as familiar with my background.

If my staff has heard this once, they have heard it a thousand times from me - “Get out of the Jar!” My Substack post on the value of broader perspectives discusses a few ways my close friend Scott Borchetta and I tackled this in our careers. This article for Forbes does it in a slightly different way!

As I continue to explore my Forbes journey, I’ll share them with you. You can also sign up and follow me on the Forbes platform from any of those stories above. Have a great week, and I look forward to sharing my Father’s Day Substack in the coming days, highlighting how I can expand further my writing style.
